Visiting restricted at Llandough hospital after Covid cases on three wards

A Welsh health board is restricting visitors at one of its hospitals due to a rise in coronavirus cases in some of its wards.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said on Wednesday that it was restricting visitors to University Hospital Llandough (UHL) in Penarth "due to an increase in positive cases on three wards."

The health board said in a statement that the cases had been identified through routine swabbing and it had put the measures in place to "ensure the safety of our staff and patients".

"By restricting footfall at UHL we will be able to contain the outbreaks and limit the risk of it spreading further," it said.

"We appreciate that this may cause anxiety for families or carers that wish to visit their loved ones in hospital and our staff will do their best to facilitate virtual visiting where possible. As per guidance on visiting, we will do all we can to accommodate, visits for end of life care, for a carers responsibility and for patients with a learning disability."

The health board added that it would also reinstate the drop off and collection service for patients' belongings from Friday, October 8.

"We hope the public understand our position and the need to restrict access early so we can contain any further spread. We are reviewing the situation regularly and will keep our website updated with further information.

"We thank everyone for their patience and continued co-operation at this time."

While the rate of infection has been falling in the past week, certain sectors in Wales have been raising issues with the virus in recent days. This week headteachers in Wales said they were “on their knees” struggling with the effects of Covid and staff and pupil absence.

Headteachers have repeated warnings of chaos as they struggle with staff and pupil absence thanks to the high number of Covid cases coming in.

Although community Covid infection rates are falling across Wales there is a sharp rise in cases among the under-25s, latest Welsh Government data shows.
