Singing carols by candlelight is an Australian tradition that dates back to 1938. That year, Melbourne radio announcer Norman Banks put on an event in Melbourne’s Alexandra Gardens that saw 10,000 people gather. The event has been repeated ever since, and has been hosted in the Sidney Myer Music Bowl since it opened in 1959.
This year Marina Prior, Denis Walter and Silvie Paladino are among the artists who will share the stage. Families are invited to bring picnic baskets and rugs for the evening. And all profits from tickets purchased will go towards Vision Australia to provide services for vision-impaired children.
