VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam ended up in the second place in the country in terms of the number of people that have provided feedback for Swachh Survekshan-2022.
The deadline for the public to submit their opinions ended on April 30, Saturday.
About 4.2 lakh people submitted their feedback from South Delhi Municipal Corporation to claim the first place among all the cities that have a population of over 10-lakh. As many as 3.74 lakh Vizagites participated in the SS-2022, which is said to be the world’s largest annual urban sanitation and cleanliness survey.
Dhanbad, Indore and Vijayawada stood in the third, fourth and fifth places respectively. Greater Hyderabad landed in the 9th place with 1.47 lakh feedback.
Among the urban local bodies that have a population between 3 lakh and 10 lakh, Warangal from Telangana occupied the first place with a participation of 1.26 lakh people. Kurnool and Nellore from Andhra Pradesh took the second and third places in this category with 0.99 and 0.78 lakh feedbacks respectively.
The second place has gone to Tirupati in the category of cities with a population of 1-3 lakh.
Speaking to TOI, GVMC commissioner G Lakshmisha said that Vizagites have enthusiastically participated in the feedback component of the survey. “The GVMC has intensified its efforts and awareness programmes to further the cleanliness and sanitation in the city. As part of this, the GVMC launched a city-level challenge to foster the spirit of healthy competition among the wards. As the 15 MW waste-to-energy plant and ‘construction and demolition’ waste processing plant have already come into operation, these are expected to improve the city’s rank in SS-2022,“ said Lakshmisha.
The GVMC joined hands with resident welfare associations, NGOs, Swachh Bharat ambassadors and other key stakeholders of the city for SS-2022 to reinforce public participation in its initiatives.
The GVMC also aggressively promoted the use of cloth bags. The cloth bag initiative has found a mention in the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann ki Baat’ programme.
Several popular film and TV personalities and prominent people of the city, including all the officers at the helm of the affairs of Vizag city and district, in their video messages talked about the important of clean surroundings and how the public involvement can uphold the cleanliness of the city.
