Visakhapatnam: Gas leaks at pharma unit; none injured

VISAKHAPATNAM: Chemical reaction in a pharma unit created tension in and around Pharma City as thick smoke emanated from the unit on Thursday.

At least eight workers in the block in which the incident took place ran for their lives. Luckily, there were no casualties and no loss to the property.

According to police, the incident took place in B block second floor of Emmennar Pharma Unit II when solvent was pumping. A chemical reaction caused the leakage of gasses and also flames. A cloud of thick smoke covered even the third floor of the block.

Fire tenders from the neighbouring IOC unit rushed to the spot and doused the flames. Emmennar is the leader in Tramadol production in the country with a production capability of 1200 MT per annum.

Villagers are requesting the pollution control board and other officials to ensure proper safety mechanisms at the pharma units.
