Virus tears through Poland squad and hits eight of Mateusz Klich's international team-mates

A flu ‘epidemic’ has torn through the Poland squad Mateusz Klich has been training with for the past week.

While the 28-year-old is expected to feature for his national side in tonight's 7.45pm kick-off with Latvia, eight of his team-mates have been affected by the virus in their camp.

Klich, who has started every Championship fixture with Leeds United this term, played the full 90 minutes of Thursday’s 1-0 win in Austria.

The huge advantage Leeds United have over their promotion rivals during the international break

The match-winner that night, Krzysztof Piatek, is one of those to have been hit with the illness and looks a serious doubt for tonight’s match.

“We have an epidemic in the team and the first to have problems ahead of the game with Austria was Arkadiusz Milik,” said head coach Jerzy Brzeczek.

“Perhaps there was something wrong with the air conditioning in the hotel in Vienna, because then many players had the same symptoms.

“Our medical staff are working quickly to ensure the virus doesn’t spread further. Jan Bednarek and Bartosz Bereszynski did not take part in today’s training session.

“The flu has hit eight players, including Piatek.”

What the table after 38 games in recent years tells us about Leeds United’s promotion chances

After tonight’s match, Klich will not play another match until Saturday’s visit of Millwall to Elland Road. He will return to West Yorkshire soon after Sunday’s game.

Marcelo Bielsa and United will have their fingers crossed Klich is not struck by the virus before he departs.
