Virus-related incidents far outweighed by people doing right thing: Police

NSW Police northern region commander Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell.

People in the Hunter are being warned not to think they can travel to holiday destinations to lay low for the coming Easter long-weekend or school holiday period, amid the worsening global health crisis.

Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell issued the warning on Friday, pointing out that many holiday destinations on the north coast, in particular, had ageing populations vulnerable to COVID-19.

He said police in the Hunter were continuing to work with other agencies such as NSW Health as the coronavirus pandemic wore on and police were increasing their presence at places like shopping centres.

Assistant Commissioner Mitchell said the few virus-related incidents police dealt with in recent days were far outweighed by people across the Hunter doing the right thing.

"Within the last 72 hours I think the general public has got the message - this is a real significant issue ... when this ends, who would know," he said.
