Osaka Prefecture confirmed 1,161 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Saturday, marking the fifth consecutive day that the daily figure has exceeded 1,000.
In Hyogo Prefecture, 541 new cases were confirmed on the same day. The figure surpassed the 510 cases reported on the previous day and hit a new record high for the second day in a row.
Meanwhile, Tokyo logged 759 new cases, the highest number recorded since the state of emergency ended in March.
The daily tally in the capital exceeded the number from the same day one week earlier for the 17th consecutive day, as the number of seriously ill patients also increased by two from Friday to 45.
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, the seven-day average of new cases came to 569, up 24.1% from 458.6 in the previous seven-day period.
