Virtually famous: Grace Carter

Grace Carter isn’t breaking any musical moulds on the handful of songs she has released so far, but you can go a long way with a sad story and a stunning voice.

The Brighton soul singer has a sizeable London show at Village Underground in the diary for next Monday and has just announced an even bigger one at Electric Brixton for the spring. By then she should have negotiated the winter tips season with aplomb and earned a few significant thumbs up from influential types. Plenty to be cheerful about, unlike the subject of her new single.

Why Her Not Me, from a superficial reading of the title, might have been a tale of a potential boyfriend who prefers another.

In fact it’s an emotional piano ballad about her estranged father starting a new family. Heavy stuff, especially in the video, in which the 21-year-old takes a lonely walk from childhood to adulthood and ends up staring mournfully into a cosy home from the outside.

It’s just passed two million YouTube views, another sign that singing success is about to sweeten her life considerably.
