Virtually Famous: Duckwrth

Hot weather needs the right soundtrack: light, smooth, nothing too aggressive. Look no further than Jared Lee, the Los Angeles rapper who as Duckwrth is about to release his first album in four years. Super Good, out next week, channels the soulful pop of Pharrell, the funk of Anderson .Paak and Thundercat and the stylishness of Outkast to come up with an essential summer sound.

It’s some distance away from his most streamed song, the violent distortion of Start a Riot from the soundtrack to the movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It’s also a long way from the music he grew up listening to in a religious south-central LA household, where it was a case of no Jesus, no airplay.

There’s a powerful sense of optimism in quarantine to the lead single, the restlessly rhythmic Find a Way, while the other advance track, Coming Closer, is rubbery electronica that’s crying out for the discos to reopen.

As a thrilling dancer and highly snappy dresser, he deserves to be seen on stage ASAP, but until then, here’s the music for your next garden gathering.
