Virtually Famous: Alfie Templeman

We’re a long way from the early Nineties heyday of indie dance, when bands such as Happy Mondays and Primal Scream pinned baggy beats to their guitar pop. But the broad tastes of young folk nowadays mean that genres are blurring all over again.

Bedfordshire teenager Alfie Templeman cites R&B star Frank Ocean and rap group Brockhampton among his influences, but has been co-writing songs with former Kaiser Chief Nick Hodgson and Justin Young of The Vaccines – men of an older generation who once made indie rock with the guitars turned up.

With 17-year-old Templeman at the front, they’ve arrived at something closer to disco on the sunny new single, Obvious Guy, and the appropriately titled Happiness in Liquid Form. The latter is also the name of his latest EP, out today, which should set him up nicely as a prime provider of a soundtrack for a socially distanced summer.

In the absence of a gap year for people his age to go on this year, he’s got the songs for many a back garden barbecue.
