Virtual visiting being launched at Scottish prisons

Inmates in Scots prisons will soon be able to chat to family via video link.

Prison chiefs have turned to technology after face-to-face meetings were suspended during lockdown.

The virtual visits are launched in Polmont, Cornton Vale and Shotts prisons next week with more to follow.

A Scottish Prison Service statement read: "We recognise the value and importance of family contact and the impact that the restrictions we have had to put in place, particularly the suspension of visits, have had on those in our care and their families.

"We have been working hard to introduce initiatives to enable better contact and today we are delighted to announce that virtual visits will be available in three of our prisons from next week."

Roll-out to the remaining prisons is expected to happen over the coming weeks with bosses anticipating they will be available at all prisons by the end of the month.

Almost 350 prisoners have been released early from Scottish jails during a programme to protect offenders from the spread of Covid-19.

A further 76 cons were freed in the final stage of the emergency scheme last week, bringing the overall total to 348.

The tally was revealed after the deaths of six inmates, including murderers and sex offenders, were linked to coronavirus in recent weeks.

Families can now book a video link slot for Polmont, Cornton Vale and Shotts.

The SPS added: "We will provide details on the when the booking for the remaining prisons will become live as it becomes available."
