Virtual Kentucky Derby on NBC in USA to be made by creators of UK Grand National version

The firm behind the Virtual Grand National have been called up to create a version of the longest continually held sporting event in America.

Inspired Entertainment are putting together a computer-generated version of the Kentucky Derby, featuring 13 horses that have completed the Triple Crown.

The race series, comprising of the Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes and the Derby, which typically draws a crowd of 155,000 people, has been won by the likes of War Admiral (1937), Secretariat (1973) and American Pharoah (2015).

The Virtual Kentucky Derby is being broadcast on NBC on May 2, the original date for the contest, postponed until September due to Covid-19.

Race fans are invited to choose their favourite horse to win the race online and make a donation to charity.

A total of $1 million will be matched by Churchill Downs.

Those who predict the winner will be entered into a draw to win a Kentucky Derby VIP experience.

"The anticipation of which Triple Crown winner will emerge as the ultimate champion is thrilling," said Bill Carstanjen, chief executive of Churchill Downs.

"But most importantly, we are proud to use this platform as a force for good by raising money for these worthy Covid-19 emergency initiatives.

"We urge fans to join us by donating and celebrating with us at home."

Last month's Virtual Grand National proved a big hit with UK punters.

Bookmakers donated £2.6 million to NHS charities after 4.8 million tuned in to ITV to watch Potters Corner emerge victorious.

The real Kentucky Derby has been rearranged to take place on September 5.

The ten-furlong contest on dirt has been run at Churchill Downs racecourse since 1875.
