VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. _ On the final day to register to vote in Virginia for the November election, the state's voter registration database is down statewide, the Virginia Beach deputy registrar confirmed Tuesday morning.
It means that any voter who wants to vote early in person while the system is down will have to cast a provisional ballot and anyone who wants to register to vote will have to do so in person, said Christine Lewis, the deputy voter registrar in Virginia Beach.
She said the state is working on restoration.
The Virginia Information Technologies Agency, which provides cybersecurity, IT infrastructure services and IT governance for the state, tweeted that technicians are on site working to repair a damaged cable. "A fiber cut near Route 10 in Chester near the Commonwealth Enterprise Solutions Center (CESC) is impacting data circuits and virtual private network (VPN) connectivity for multiple Commonwealth agencies," according to a tweet.
A spokeswoman from the agency said the fiber was cut overnight and they were working to determine the cause.
Other state websites, such as the DMV, also appear to be down. The Virginia Employment Commission's site, where unemployed Virginians can make benefit claims is also down.
