MINNEAPOLIS _ De'Andre Hunter scored 27 points as No. 1 Virginia held off No. 3 Texas Tech 85-77 in overtime for the NCAA men's basketball title before 72,062 at U.S. Bank Stadium on Monday night.
Both teams were seeking their first championship.
Jarrett Culver's basket with 35 seconds remaining in regulation gave Tech a 66-65 lead.
Virginia's Ty Jerome missed a shot at the other end, and the Cavs fouled Norense Odiase. He made both free throws for a 68-65 lead.
But Hunter hit a 3-pointer for Virginia to tie the game at 68 with 14 seconds left. Jarrett Culver missed a long 3-pointer for the Red Raiders with five seconds remaining. Culver's shot at the buzzer was blocked by Braxton Key, forcing overtime.
Matt Mooney gave Tech a 73-70 lead with three minutes left in the extra period with a 3-pointer, but Hunter's 3 at the other end a minute later put the Cavs ahead 75-73, a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Jerome and Kyle Guy, who had 24 points, both made two free throws following that.
Brandone Francis had 17 for Tech.
Jerome hit a 3-pointer as the first half ended to give Virginia a 32-29 lead. The Cavaliers led by as many as 10 in the first half before Tech caught up, led by eight points each from Moretti and Francis.
The Cavaliers were 34-3 entering the game, while Tech was 31-6.
