Virginia Tech (0-1) vs. Old Dominion (1-0) Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Can Virginia Tech keep screwing up?

The Hokies played Boston College even in the 35-28 loss, but the one giant difference was the -4 turnover margin off of five turnovers. Ryan Willis threw three picks, too many promising drives stalled, and it turned out to be the Week One problem from a team that needed more of a tune-up.

But Old Dominion didn’t need a slew of takeaways to beat the Hokies last season.

Virginia Tech cranked up 600 yards of total offense in the 49-35 loss to Monarchs, and it wasn’t enough.

ODU didn’t rip apart Norfolk State in the 24-21 win last week, but QB Stone Smart hit his short-range passes – hitting 17-of-23 passes – and he was able to spread the ball around well, but …

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

It took a late touchdown to avoid an embarrassing disaster. Old Dominion’s offense didn’t work after a good first quarter. If couldn’t run, there wasn’t a big downfield pass until late, and it was an ugly overall performance.

Considering all the transfers and all of the losses, Virginia Tech was able to hang around in a good, tough ACC road game with BC, and even outgained the Eagles.

Despite allowing 35 points, and a decent passing day from Anthony Brown, the Hokies defense wasn’t all that bad considering how many bad positions it was put in.

As long as the offense doesn’t start turning the ball over and as long as it doesn’t give ODU a slew of easy chances and short fields, there shouldn’t be a problem.

What’s Going To Happen

Normally, this might be gloss-over game with the Power Five program going through the motions against the Group of Fiver. But after the ugly loss to the Monarchs last season, and considering Virginia Tech desperately needs a win after losing six of its last eight games, this isn’t going to be pretty.
