All You Really Need To Know About Liberty (29-6)

(Atlantic Sun), NCAA NET Rank: 58. East 12-seed

The Flames were brilliant in the 80-76 win over Mississippi State, managing to hit their free throws in crunch time after struggling from the field over the final six minutes. They hit their three point tries early on – with Caleb Homesley finishing with 30 points. Closing with a 21-9 run, they pulled off a total shocker – sort of. They’ve been that good throughout the year, helped by an amazing defense that put the clamps down when it had to in the second half.

Normally great against three point shooting teams, Mississippi State was able to connect on 36% of its tries. Liberty doesn’t have a big problem with turnovers, is deadly from the field, and is great at coming with the extra pass. However, it’ll lose the rebounding battle – it has to hit its shots.

All You Really Need To Know About Virginia Tech (25-8)

(ACC), NCAA NET Rank: 11. East 4-seed

40-18. Virginia Tech got up fast on Saint Louis, helped off a late charge, and didn’t have too much of a problem in the 66-52 win. The Hokies got thumped on the boards 36-29, but the three point shooting was the key. Virginia Tech only hit 4-of-10 tries, but the Billikens connected on 4-of-23 attempts.

Stop the Liberty three point shooting, and stop Liberty.

The Hokies are normally unafraid of jacking it up from the outside, but if they don’t have to, that’s all the better. Unlike Saint Louis, Liberty isn’t tough on the boards. Better yet for the Hokies, the Flames are lousy at shooting free throws.

What’s Going To Happen

This is a good team for Virginia Tech to deal with. Mississippi State would’ve been a massive problem – considering its ability to hit the boards – but Liberty is a gritty quick team that shoots threes. The Hokies can handle that.
