Virginia Tech’s Buzz Williams tried to recruit Tony Romo for tournament broadcast

No. 4 seed Virginia Tech had a 38-34 lead over No. 1 seed Duke at halftime in Friday night’s Sweet 16 game in Washington, D.C. And Hokies coach Buzz Williams was feeling good at the break.

And he used his halftime interview with CBS’ Tracy Wolfson to advocate for a change to the network’s crew working the game. Williams asked Wolfson if Jim Nantz was calling the game, and when Wolfson told him Nantz was, Williams asked if Tony Romo jump in instead.

Williams: Is Nantz calling the game?

Wolfson: He is.

Williams: Can we sub Tony Romo in for Coach (Bill Raftery), so it’s like NFL on Sunday with you, Nantz and Romo? Get Coach outta there!

Now, Raftery has been calling the NCAA tournament for decades — this is his 37th season — so that’s a tough (and hilarious) argument to make.

But the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback has captured the attention and hearts of football fans everywhere with his sometimes eerie ability to predict a play before it happens on the field.

Still, poor Raftery. But Romo wasn’t available to sub in anyway.

Virginia Tech was inches away from forcing overtime against Duke, but a missed shot with one second left handed the Blue Devils a 75-73 victory and a trip to the Elite Eight.
