Virgin Trains' last ever service from London to Manchester set off last night - but then failed to reach its destination due to a fault.
Customers on the train, which was the final Virgin would run on the West Coast Main Line, spoke of their journey stopping short at Stockport.
Virgin services on the line will now be taken over by Avanti West Coast, ending more than 20 years of Virgin services on the line.
One person wrote: "The last ever Virgin train from London to Manchester and something's gone wrong so they've chucked everyone off.
"Going out in style."
Virgin Trains' twitter account responded to this and said it was "really sorry" and the issue was "a fault with this train".
The operator wrote of its sadness on twitter and said: "Thank you for travelling with Virgin trains."
Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson thanked his staff in a tweet and wrote: "A huge thank you to all our wonderful people at Virgin Trains - it's down to all of your incredible work every day that Virgin Trains has been the UK's longest running and top-rated rail franchise."
The operator's final ever train left from Euston to Wolverhampton at 9.42pm on Saturday.
