Virgin Radio to broadcast on Freeview

Virgin Radio is to launch on Freeview after a deal with digital marketing agency YooMedia and is exploring interactive television services.

YooMedia will provide bandwidth for the transmission of Virgin Radio on the digital terrestrial TV service in a multiyear agreement.

It will mean Virgin Radio will be available to the 7m UK homes which have a Freeview set-top box in addition to its existing national AM analogue service, London FM service and digital radio and internet broadcasts.

YooMedia and Virgin Radio will also jointly explore "value-added interactive services for delivery alongside Virgin Radio programming", according to a statement issued today.

Fru Hazlitt, the Virgin Radio chief executive, said: "In order to achieve maximum growth, it is critical that Virgin Radio is accessible across every available platform."

Virgin Radio on Freeview will operate alongside YooMedia's DTT datacasting service, which is provided to tvtv, a branch of Sony UK, Gemstar-TV Guide International and Electra Entertainment Limited.
