Virgin Radio's Chris Evans says wife's intervention helped address health issue

Chris Evans has spoken about how his wife forcing him out for a cold run at the weekend has helped him address an ongoing health condition,

The 54-year-old Virgin Radio DJ opened up about his feeling that he might have Raynaud's Disease and that going for a 14-mile run with wife Natasha Shishmanian might have helped him realise that this is a definite possibility.

Raynaud's Disease is a condition that affects the circulation causing some areas of the body like fingers and toes, to change colour when cold or stressed.

He said that after the morning run, in the winter cold, his hands went into 'freeze mode' and showed the symptoms of the disease.

Chris brought up the subject on his breakfast show but co-presenter Vassos Alexander believed there was an ulterior motive to him running so far at the weekend.

Chris said: "Tash and I were out for a bit of a run on Saturday... bit of a run, she dragged me out for 14 miles again!"

Vassos reckoned there was more to it and that Chris was actually secretly training for the Ultra Challenge which Natasha might be planning on doing this year.

This consists of runs of different mileage in which those entering can walk or jog, for charitable causes.

Vassos said: "Ah, the untalked about Ultra that she's training for. Or you are..."

Chris jumped in: "I'm not! Vassos, on our friendship, I'm not training from an Ultra.

"I hoped to be training for an afternoon on the sofa, but I wasn't!"

Vassos retorted: "Well, you're not training for an Ultra as far as you know!"

"No," Chris replied, "But I think she might be training me along with her, poor thing."

Chris added: "By the way, I'm not the lightest of weight to drag around when you're as fit as she is!"

It was here that Chris spoke about how the winter chill had affected his hands and that his wife of 14 years also suffered from the cold as well.

Chris said: "She has an issue that her left hand goes cold but her right hand doesn't," he noted.

"I think we've talked about it on the show before..."

Vassos interrupted: "It's like cars, my Fiat 500 - left side is an absolute block of ice, right hand side, fine!"

Rolling his eyes, Chris interjected: "That'll be the wind or something like that, the direction of the cold front, you idiot!"

Chris had spoken to his listeners before about why certain parts of your body, especially the limbs, can get cold so quickly when the temperature drops.

He said at the time: "The reason your hands and feet get cold when you're outside and you're doing something is because there are so many nerve endings in your hands and feet that require heat to work, that they take up an inordinate amount of heat within your body."

To combat that, Chris revealed that he found the perfect solution.

He told his listeners: "This week was the first time ever running in waterproof socks - they're amazing!

"Unbelievable! They kept my feet a bit warmer, but my hands are better off without gloves and just using these hand warmers now and again."
