Virgin Money to slash 200 jobs in Glasgow at former Clydesdale Bank HQ

Around 200 jobs will be axed in Glasgow as Virgin Money cuts costs during the coronavirus crisis.

The positions will be lost at the former Clydesdale Bank HQ in the city as the high street lender looks to scrap up to 400 roles across the UK as a whole.

Bank bosses said the cuts are part of a three-year plan to reduce its workforce by 16 percent by 2021 following the merger with Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank in 2018.

The cuts are in addition to the 300 redundancies announced earlier this year due to bank branch closures.

Lucy Dimes, chief strategy and transformation officer at Virgin Money UK, said: "Decisions on jobs are never taken lightly, particularly in the more challenging environment brought about by the pandemic, and our focus is on minimising the impact on colleagues from the changes as much as we can.”

In addition to the 200 in Glasgow, 150 job losses are expected to go in Gosforth and 50 from the former Yorkshire Bank office in Leeds.

Dimes added: "We are committed to bringing our operations together under the Virgin Money brand to offer customers a sustainable business which is fit for the future.

"We will support all affected colleagues, helping them find alternative roles within the business and avoiding compulsory redundancies wherever possible."

The cuts are due to take effect during the first few months of next year and Virgin Money said it hoped to achieve as many job losses as possible through natural turnover.
