Virgin Money have best response as Piers Morgan brands Newcastle socially distanced gigs "so weird"

Virgin Money had the best response as Piers Morgan branded the socially distanced gigs happening in Newcastle as "so weird."

In a huge coup for the city and the surrounding area, Gosforth Park is now home to the UK's first socially distanced gigs, with local lad Sam Fender getting the party started with the first of his two sold out shows on Tuesday night.

The action is all taking place in the outdoor Virgin Money Unity Arena right next to Newcastle Racecourse and 2,500 people flocked to see Sam in action, all curious to see how it would compare to the concerts we took for granted before coronavirus hit.

The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive and, while the layout at the arena, which sees ticket holders seated in their own pens or on their own podiums at the correct distance from others, is so different to the norm, it didn't stop there being a brilliant atmosphere for Sam's show.

Videos from the gig have spread like wildfire on social media, meaning many people have had their say. And that now includes Piers Morgan.

The outspoken Good Morning Britain host never holds back when it comes to giving is opinions and retweeting a video he'd seen of Tuesday's concert, he wrote: "Sooooo weird."

But, hats off to Virgin Money as they maintained professionalism while hitting back at Piers with a great response. They tweeted: "Are you just saying this because you didn’t manage to get a ticket @piersmorgan? Don’t worry, we’ve got a platform with your name on it."

Others were quick to side with them too, including a number who'd been at Gosforth Park on Tuesday. One replied: "so sick of these negative comments from people who weren’t even there! It was one of the best gigs ever!! Safe, no bar queues, clean portaloos and an electric atmosphere!! We need to support the music industry. Stop picking!!!!!"

Another commented: "Very weird, but a fantastic idea! Glad Newcastle have had the first, but at least it’s a step forward and people are safe," while a third joked: "He doesn't need a platform - don't encourage him."
