Virgin Mobile reveals it's giving all customers free data after 10-hour meltdown

Virgin Mobile has said it will give all customers a free day of data to make up for the network's meltdown on Tuesday.

To apologise for the inconvenience caused, the company said pay monthly customers will receive 5GB extra data at no extra cost to use anytime this Sunday (May 19).

Customers who have an unlimited mobile SIM will also have their accounts credited with the price of one day’s airtime. This will be applied to their next bill.

The network said it's currently in the process of contacting customers to make them aware of the goodwill gesture.

This will be via email or text message, it said.

Thousands of customers were left unable to access the internet for more than 10 hours on Tuesday after a technical fault saw they network crash nationwide.

"We apologise for the disruption and inconvenience some of our Virgin Mobile customers have experienced today," a statement read after the issue was fixed.

"This was due to a technical issue which we've now resolved."

If you've been left out of pocket as a result of the outage, here are your Virgin Mobile compensation rights .
