Virgin Media goes down across UK as customers struggle to get online

Virgin Media, one of the UK's largest internet providers, has apologised after its broadband service crashed for thousands of customers.

Customers have been struggling to get online after an "intermittent broadband issue" on Monday evening.

Virgin Media said it is investigating the issue, which is seeing broadband connectivity interrupted for a short period of time before being restored.

Outage tracking website Down Detector saw a surge in reports of people struggling to use their internet connections.

The outage began just after 5pm and although many said their service came back online shortly after, others have reported ongoing problems several hours later.

Despite ongoing complaints on social media about the service continuing to drop out every 20 minutes or so, Virgin said earlier that the problem had been fixed.

A spokesman said: "While services are currently back up and running, our teams are looking into the problem and will work flat out to fix it. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

But the spokesman later added: "We’re aware of an intermittent broadband issue which has been causing connections to drop for a couple of mins and then return again.

"This isn’t due to capacity or usage problems and our teams are currently working on a fix. We know it’s frustrating and we’re sorry."
