Virgin Media and Sky will soon be beaten by ultimate broadband speeds from EE

Virgin Media and Sky might both offer broadband speeds in excess of 900Mbps but they are about to be beaten by EE. The UK mobile network - which is now owned by BT - is set to launch a brand new service that will see homes being treated to downloads at a staggeringly quick 1.6Gbps. At that rapid rate, it would take just 20 seconds to download an HD Hollywood movie or only 4 minutes to whizz a 50GB PS5 game to the next-gen console.

Those taking advantage of the new offering from EE, which is expected to arrive this summer, will find their speeds will be around 22 times faster than the current UK average.

Along with being quicker, EE is also promising that subscribers will get a more powerful new router as well. The Smart Hub Plus should make sure the connection reaches every corner of homes and eradicate those annoying black spots.

There will also be the option to add something called Smart Hybrid Connect which automatically switches over to EE’s mobile signal should the fixed-line broadband go offline.

There’s no word on pricing or an official launch date but expect things to cost over £60 per month when it finally launches in a few month’s time.

Speaking about the launch Marc Allera, CEO at EE said “As we create the UK’s most personal customer-focused brand, we continually look to bring truly innovative products and services to market to help our customers manage their increasingly busy households. Whether it be working from home, gaming, or juggling the increasingly digital elements of everyday life – EE home broadband backed-up by EE’s award-winning mobile network will set the standard for broadband for years to come, offering customers the best experience and putting them in control of their home connectivity.”

Here’s how EE’s new speeds compare to slower downloads

• EE 1.6Gbps • 20 seconds to download a full HD movie

• Virgin Media Gig1 • 40 seconds to download a full HD movie

• Sky 900Mbps • 45 seconds to download a full HD movie

• UK average 72Mbps • 8 minutes to download a full HD movie

Along with that fast broadband, EE has also launched a new flagship store at Westfield in West London.

The retail space includes a Welcome Zone, Digital Spa to help consumers with their well-being and a Gaming Zone to experience the latest titles.

There's even a stage where EE will be hosting events. The EE Studio opens to the public at 12pm on Friday 16th June.
