Virgin Atlantic to allow passengers to change flights for free during coronavirus outbreak

Worried passengers who are booked to fly with Virgin Atlantic will now be able to reschedule their flight free of charge.

The airline has offered a compromise for passengers who want to book a holiday where the FCO currently doesn't advise against travel.

Until the end of March, it has announced it will be waiving its usual 'change fee', meaning travellers concerned about the coronavirus outbreak can book onto a different service without financial penalty.

This will be available for seats booked between the March 4 - 31 2020, and includes travel up to and including the September 30, 2020.

The policy will apply to all routes across Virgin Atlantic 's network - including tickets booked on codeshare flights - where other airlines share the same flight - such as with Delta, Air France and KLM.

But the offer only applies to rescheduling and not cancellations.

If you want to cancel your trip and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office hasn't advised against travel, you'll likely be subject to a cancellation fee.

And if there hasn't been a warning from the FCO, you probably won't be able to claim back on your travel insurance either, as it's not designed to cover 'disinclination to travel'.  You can read more about your legal rights concerning travel during the coronavirus outbreak here .

Earlier this week, British Airways announced a similar policy, where it will waive flight change fees for customers who book within the next two weeks.

For new bookings made between Tuesday March 3  and Monday March 16 2020, passengers will be able to change flights without penalties, however cannot ask for a refund if they decide not to travel. BA's chief commercial officer, Andrew Brem, said: “As some customers may choose to change or delay their travel plans at the moment, it’s important we offer them greater flexibility.

“By waiving our change fee our customers can have the added confidence to book a trip with British Airways that suits them.”
