Virgin Atlantic sends giant A340-600 series to Prestwick Airport as planes park up during coronavirus lockdown

Airline giant Virgin Atlantic turned to Prestwick Airport as the coronavirus hit the aviation industry.

At least two of their Airbus planes were among the first to be parked up.

The Virgin A340-600 series is one of the longest public aircraft ever made and normally flies from Heathrow to the US.

Spotters have been taking shots of the recently landed planes.

Virgin Atlantic boss Richard Branson asked staff to take eight weeks unpaid leave as a result of the travel ban following the pandemic.

The airline plans to ground 80 per cent of its fleet.

Ryanair, which flies from Prestwick, has also been cancelling most of its flights. Prestwick Airport said it was unable to comment before deadline.

The Scottish Government owned airport is up for sale.
