Virgin Atlantic Heathrow flight forced to divert to Canada after emergency declared on board

A Virgin Atlantic flight was forced to divert to Canada due to a mid-air emergency (Alamy/PA) -

A Virgin Atlantic flight from Miami to London’s Heathrow was forced to divert to Canada after a man suffered a cardiac arrest mid-flight.

Flight VS118 declared an emergency on board while cruising at 38,000 feet over the North Atlantic after leaving Miami at 11.04pm on Friday.

Cabin crew used the onboard defibrillator and performed chest compressions on the man for 30 minutes, as the plane changed course.

The flight was diverted to Gander International Airport in Canada, so the man could be treated by emergency services.

Thanks to the efforts of those onboard, the man was successfully revived.

After refueling at Gander International Airport, the flight departed at 7.11am local time and arrived in London Heathrow at 2.52pm.

A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson said: “Due to an unwell customer onboard, the VS118 on 24th May flying from Miami to London Heathrow diverted to Gander International Airport, Canada and was met by the medical services.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is always our number one priority and we apologise for the delay to our customer’s journey.”
