Virgin Atlantic announces new direct flight from Manchester to Jamaica

Virgin Atlantic has announced a new direct flight from Manchester to Jamaica.

The flight route from Manchester Airport to Montego Bay will launch in November and be available to book from August 18.

It will be the first time there ever has been a scheduled flight to the exotic destination, known affectionately by locals as Mobay, from Manchester.

The route will operate three times a week during the winter sun season.

The launch follows the UK government's announcement that fully vaccinated Brits no longer need to quarantine on return from amber destinations.

The Foreign and Commonwealth and Development Office guidance has also reconfirmed that travel to Jamaica is now possible.

The country has been welcoming UK visitors back since borders reopened in June 2020.

All Brits, including those aged 12 and over need to show proof of a negative PCR, NAA, RNA or an antigen test performed by an accredited lab within three days of travelling.

Travellers must also complete a simple travel authorisation form before they arrive.

In response to Virgin Atlantic's announcement, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, minister of tourism for Jamaica, said: "We are heartened by Virgin Atlantic’s decision to begin offering new airlift service between Montego Bay and Manchester, England this November.

"This thrice flight will be a great addition to the numerous new and returning flights the island has been welcoming this year, as we continue to recover from the impact of the pandemic.

"These new flights are indeed a signal of the confidence our stakeholders have in our tourism industry, as well as the safety of our destination for their passengers.

"Key to this success are our robust Tourism COVID-19 health and safety protocols as well as our innovative Resilient Corridors, which have seen a very low infection rate of 0.6 per cent, in addition to high vaccination rates in key source markets.”

Donovan White, director of tourism for Jamaica, said: "It is very safe to say that tourism is steadily rebounding and the demand for Jamaica is very high, thanks to companies such as Virgin Atlantic who believe in the power of Brand Jamaica.

"We look forward to welcoming their passengers from November, to enjoy a truly unforgettable Jamaican experience, in an environment which is safe, seamless and secure."
