'Virgil van Mari!' - Arsenal fans go wild as Gunners confirm first signing of Mikel Arteta era

The transfer saga is over and Pablo Mari has now joined Arsenal.

The former Manchester City defender's future has been the subject of much speculation in recent days, amid reports that he was set to join the Gunners and become the first signing since Mikel Arteta was appointed as the Gunners head coach.

Mari was seen flying into London last week for talks, but there had been fears the deal could collapse as he returned to Brazil over the weekend.

However, the deal has finally been done, with Arsenal confirming that he has now joined on an initial loan deal, with an option to buy.

The six stages to a football medical

Arsenal's announcement of the deal came about an hour after Flamengo had confirmed Mari was leaving the club, with the 26-year-old arriving on loan until the end of this season for a fee of £4million. The Gunners also have the option to buy Mari in the summer.

And his signing has certainly got Arsenal fans excited, with some Gunners supporters going wild over the club's first transfer in the January window.

Here's what some fans have had to say.

Mari started out his career at Mallorca, before playing for Gimnastic in Spain.

In 2016, he joined Manchester City, but he did not feature for them in the Premier League, with Mari going out on loan to Girona, NAC Breda and Deportivo la Coruna.

The Spaniard made the move to Brazil in July last year, signing a contract with Flamengo until 2022, but after impressing in South America, he has now made the switch to England.
