Virgil van Dijk tips Liverpool for European domination after Barcelona comeback

Virgil van Dijk has claimed Liverpool's emphatic comeback against Barcelona is only just the beginning.

The Reds demolished their Spanish opponents on a thrilling night at Anfield which saw them progress to a successive Champions League final.

Barcelona had come into the match with a three-goal advantage from the first leg, but were put to the sword as van Dijk and co. ran out 4-0 winners.

The performance was reminiscent of some of the famous Liverpool teams which dominated Europe in the seventies and eighties.

And van Dijk believes this Liverpool team are capable of emulating their success.

Van Dijk said: "That’s something we are working towards.

“I feel that (Manchester) City already have that bit of status, because they have been dominating so much.

“But hopefully we can keep going and make it very difficult for any team in the world. Not many sides do that to Barcelona.

“We have a great age group of players, between 20 and 27 or 28.

“So hopefully we can do it altogether for the next couple of years at least and grow as a team and get a lot of successes.”

Few gave the Reds much hope of overturning a 3-0 opening leg defeat away at the Nou Camp.

But an early goal from Divock Origi, along with the roar of the Anfield crowd, provided the catalysts for a famous victory.

Barcelona struggled to cope with Liverpool's fast-pressing, high octane football, which van Dijk credits for the win.

He added: "If you see how we play. Not many teams make it that difficult for Barcelona. How we pressed them. How we created chances against them. Put them in difficult situations.

"You have to be brave. You have take a lot of risk defensively and we did it.

“I’m just so proud of everyone for that. We did it and we totally deserved it and I think the most important thing is we believed from the start, from even when the game finished over there that we still could do it.

Everyone was saying that we couldn’t but we showed it.”

Liverpool release Champions League final ticket details after Barcelona comeback

Jurgen Klopp's side must now turn their attentions to a final Premier League fixture, which could yet see them crowned as Champions.

Manchester City lead the Merseyside club by a poing heading into the last day, with few expecting them to slip up.

“There’s still a game to go and Brighton away is not easy. But Wolves at home is certainly not easy either,' van Dijk said.

"We need to try to get three points. If we do that then we did what we could do. We’ll see what’s going to happen in Brighton. I’m definitely a proud man, anyway.

“We’ve been working very hard this season. It’s just the start. We’ve had a fantastic season, both of us. Man City has been outstanding as well.

"To compete with them says a lot about how we’re progressing from last year.
“It’s just the start. It’s not like next year we’re not going to try to do it again. It’s something we have to build on. There’s still a game to play for them and us on Sunday, and we’ll see.”
