Virgil van Dijk targeted by Barcelona and Real Madrid in record-breaking move

Barcelona and Real Madrid are targeting Virgil van Dijk in a transfer that would smash the world transfer fee record for a defender.

The Holland centre-back joined Liverpool from Southampton for a staggering £75million in January 2018, a figure that saw his former club Celtic earn around £7m thanks to a sell-on clause.

It remained a record for two years until Harry Maguire joined Manchester United for £80m this summer.

Van Dijk is widely considered the best defender in the game and has helped Liverpool to back-to-back Champions League Finals – including the victory over Tottenham in May.

Now Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are eyeing moves for van Dijk, according to Dario AS.

And it is being reported elsewhere the Anfield club would not let him go for anything less than £150m.

The 28-year-old was this month due to sign a new contract until 2025 but no official announcement has been made on the renewal.
