Virgil van Dijk takes huge step forward as Liverpool line-up confirmed for Bologna

Virgil van Dijk will make his first start since returning from serious injury when he lines up in the first of Liverpool's two 60-minute friendlies against Bologna this afternoon.

Van Dijk made his long-awaited comeback after more than nine months out with a serious knee problem when coming through a 21-minute run-out from the bench against Hertha Berlin last Thursday.

And the centre-back will take another significant step in today's match at the Stade Camille-Fournier in Evian, France.

Van Dijk will partner Joel Matip in defence, with Jurgen Klopp largely retaining the side that has started the last two friendlies.

With Alisson Becker having only at the weekend resumed training, Caoimhin Kelleher continues in goal.

Andy Robertson replaces Kostas Tsimikas at left-back with Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, while James Milner, Naby Keita and Harvey Elliott remain in midfield.

Up front, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are joined by Diogo Jota, who like Robertson makes his first start of pre-season having featured in Euro 2020.

The game kicks off at 3pm BST. Liverpool play another 60-minute friendly against Bologna at 5pm at the same venue.

LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Milner, Keita, Elliott; Jota, Mane, Salah.

Subs: Karius, Pitaluga, R Williams, Woodburn, Beck.
