Virgil van Dijk snubs Liverpool great Jamie Carragher with Twitter declaration

Virgil van Dijk has snubbed Liverpool great Jamie Carragher during a question and answer session on Twitter.

The Dutchman, like the rest of his Premier League colleagues, is in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He took to social media to answer questions, one of which came from player turned pundit Carragher who asked him which Reds defender he has drawn inspiration from.

“What former @LFC defender in the @premierleague era did you base your game on?” he said on Twitter.

But Van Dijk's reply was quick witted and he came back with: “Tough one ... probably Sami Hyypiä,” followed by two laughing face emojis.

Carragher and Hyypia once formed an impressive partnership in the middle of Liverpool's defender.

The former spent the entirety of his 16 year career at Anfield making 737 appearances.

Hyypia meanwhile headed to Merseyside as an unknown quantity in 1999 but went on to spend a decade at the club.

Both players were part of the famous 2005 Champions League winning side.

Van Dijk also went on to say that it would be himself or Joe Gomez who would win a 100m sprint involving Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.

Sergio Aguero was named as the most difficult striker the 28-year-old has had to mark across 90 minutes while its the striker's compatriot Lionel Messi who Van Dijk said was his toughest opponent.

He also claimed that former Celtic man Stefan Johansen, who is now at Fulham, was among the best players he played alongside in Glasgow.

Away from the pitch the centre-half has said that anything made by Cadburys ranks as his favourite biscuit while the Lion King is his No 1 animation film.
