Virgil van Dijk sends message to Nathan Ake over Man City transfer

Virgil van Dijk has sent his well wishes to compatriot Nathan Ake after he completed his move to Manchester City.

The two Dutchman are likely to be in a tussle for the Premier League title next term such has been their dominance over the past few years.

But Van Dijk put rivalry aside as he commented on Ake's tweet which included an image of him with his new City shirt.

The 25-year-old said: "Very excited to join @mancity. Can’t wait to get started!"

To which the Liverpool star replied: "Happy for you bro!"

Ake cost City £41m and will serve to improve a defence that undermined their title defence as Liverpool eased to a first Premier League crown.

The former Bournemouth man was also expected to leave the Vitality Stadium after the Cherries were relegated to the second tier.

He will join Aymeric Laporte, John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi as defensive options for Pep Guardiola.

Manchester United and Chelsea both eyed Ake before his move but both had reserevations about pursuing the transfer.

Nevetheless Ake spoke of his delight and moving to the Ethiad and cited their Catalan manager as a huge draw.

“City have been the best side in England over the course of the last decade,” he said.

“Coming here is a dream for me. This is a top side full of world-class players. Everywhere you look in this squad there are big names with international pedigree.

“Pep is a manager admired across the world – what he’s done in the game speaks for itself. The success he’s had is unbelievable and the style of football he plays really appeals to me.

“I know I’m going to have to work hard to get into the side, but that’s what I’m here to do. I’ll do whatever I can to make an impact and help the team win silverware.”
