After the safety car was brought in following a crash late in the race, Verstappen was given one lap to overtake Hamilton to win his first world title.

And the Dutchman did just this as he powered past his rival to go past the chequered flag in first place.

Van Dijk tweeted his support for Verstappen moments after the race had finished as he posted: "WHAT A BOSS! @Max33Verstappen"

The Dutch defender is the captain of his national side and is seen as an inspirational figure in his homeland so the message of support will have gone down well with the new F1 World Champion.
