Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool stars should "stay home" if they aren't confident

Virgil van Dijk has laid out Liverpool's double aim for the rest of the season, and says any of his teammates who aren't confident of success can "just stay home."

The Reds beat Porto 2-0 in Tuesday night's Champions League quarter-final first leg at Anfield, and sit on top of the Premier League with five games of their season remaining.

Should they go all the way to the Champions League final in Madrid then they will have nine games left in their season, with success in both competitions now a real possibility.

And the Dutchman says his teammates must believe it can happen.

"It's still something we need to believe and do, but if you think about it, what is nine games?" Van Dijk told reporters at Anfield.

"You have to believe otherwise you can just stay home next time. Go for it.

"We played a tough team, good result, but it's not over. It'll be even harder over there [in Porto], but hopefully we do the job and go to the next round.

"We should be confident anyway, it's a great time to be a Liverpool player and, hopefully, there are nine games left if everything goes well, fingers crossed.

"We'll give everything we've got then have a well-deserved break after."

Van Dijk also hailed the impact of Naby Keita, who opened the scoring for the Reds for the second game in a row.

"He's a fantastic player, we see obviously him day in, day out," he said

"I'm just happy for him. He's starting, but to score two goals in two games is very pleasing for him and very important for all of us."
