Virgil van Dijk's player of the year award has these Arsenal fans saying the same thing

Virgil van Dijk has been named as UEFA mens player of the year.

The Liverpool defender beat off competition from Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to claim the accolade during the UEFA Champions League group stage draw that was held in Monaco on Thursday.

The PFA Premier League player of the year has been an important part of Jurgen Klopp's team that were crowned as European Champions last season, and only missed out on the Premier League title by one point.

However, Arsenal fans have been pointing out how their new £72m arrival at the Emirates ended an impressive record for the Dutch defender.

Nicolas Pepe made his full debut for the Gunners against Liverpool last weekend, and became the first player in over 50 Premier League games to dribble past van Dijk. March 2018 was the last time that happened, when Mikel Merino of Newcastle achieved the feat.

Although, away from the Premier League, Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus also managed to dribble past the Dutchman in the Community Shield at the start of the season.

Unai Emery: Arsenal showed 'character' against Liverpool

Upon the announcement of van Dijk being named as the mens player of the year at the ceremony, Arsenal fans were quick to point out and revel in their player's achievement.

See the reaction below.

Pepe will be hoping to replicate beating van Dijk when the two teams meet again in the Premier League, although he will have to wait until May 2020 to do so.
