Virgil van Dijk is set to join Holland at Euro 2020 this summer - despite declaring himself unable to play in the tournament.
The Liverpool defender has been recuperating from a serious knee injured suffered after a late Jordan Pickford tackle during the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park in October of last year.
Van Dijk revealed his intention to sit out the tournament back in May, explaining that his focus was on being fit to begin pre-season training with Liverpool on July 12.
But according to a report in the Mirror, Van Dijk will continue in a backroom role for his country throughout the tournament.
The 29-year-old was seated behind the dugout during Holland's 2-2 draw with Scotland in a warm-up game in Portugal in midweek.
And boss Frank De Boer explained how important his captain's influence is behind the scenes.
He said: : “Virgil is so important for this squad and is a massive motivational factor who has always been important for the boys over the past few years.
“The team loves his presence.”
