Virgil van Dijk returns to Liverpool training centre as recovery continues

Virgil van Dijk is back in Liverpool training less than five weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

The Reds centre-back suffered damage to his anterior cruciate ligament following a reckless tackle from Jordan Pickford in the 2-2 draw with Everton on October 17.

Van Dijk was initially taken for a scan after the game before a specialist confirmed that surgery would be needed the following day.

The Netherlands captain underwent a successful operation in London at the end of October and is now performing light duties at the club's AXA Training Centre in Kirkby.

Van Dijk posted a series of pictures to his social media accounts on Friday of him working with the club's coaches inside the gym.

"Working harder than ever" was the £75million defender's caption alongside a handful of images of him using the facilities at the brand new training complex.

Van Dijk is likely to be some way away from resuming ball work on the pitches, but the images will no doubt come as a boost to a Liverpool squad that has been struck by injury problems all season.

Liverpool have yet to rule out Van Dijk featuring again this season and hope his otherwise excellent injury record will count in his favour on the road to recovery.

Van Dijk's mentality and attitude over the course of his near three-year Anfield career were initially cited as reasons to be optimistic.

However, while the images of the Dutchman will be viewed as good news to the club's fanbase, Reds officials are likely to be wary of suggestions the defender will return ahead of schedule.

No time frame was placed on Van Dijk's comeback following the injury and there is unlikely to be one in place now seven weeks after the incident at Goodison Park.
