Virgil van Dijk 'replacement' target baulks at Jamie Carragher's Liverpool claim

Virgil van Dijk “replacement” target Conor Coady laughed off claims of a Liverpool transfer when asked by Jamie Carragher.

The Dutchman picked up an ACL tear in the 2-2 draw against Everton that is expected to keep him out for most of the season.

It has seen the Premier League champions start the hunt for a replacement, with some suggesting they should look within.

While others, including Carragher, think the Anfield side should get busy during the January transfer window.

And footage has emerged of the former centre-back trying to convince a top-flight star to take over from van Dijk.

In the clip, the Sky Sports pundit was in the studio to cover Wolves ’ 1-0 win over Leeds.

Coady, the former Liverpool academy man who has nearly 200 appearances for the Molineux side under his belt, is giving the post-match interview.

And Carragher asks the England international: “Jurgen Klopp has done his press conference ahead of the Champions League game tonight with Ajax.

“He’s mentioned two other players that could be replacements for Virgil van Dijk.

“Would that come into your thinking?”

But the Wolves captain quickly shut down any speculation of a return to Anfield.

“I can’t believe you just put this on me here,” Coady said while laughing.

“Not at all. I love playing for this football club every single day and we’ve just beaten Leeds.”

The studio is left in stitches as Carragher fumbles his words trying to explain the question.

It comes as the Liverpool legend previously suggested the Reds should go for a Manchester United target in January.

“Liverpool's next signing had to be a centre-back next summer anyway,” he said.

"That was the next one, that has to be brought forward to 1st January - not the end of the month.

"Upamecano, at RB Leipzig, there’s talk of him. He's not the profile of Van Dijk. But that's the one Liverpool wanted next summer.

“Bring it forward, pay the extra money and do it on January 1st. That means Liverpool have to get through the next 11 league games without Van Dijk. They have to go big in terms of a signing.”
