Virgil van Dijk releases positive workout footage as Liverpool star trains on grass

Virgil van Dijk has posted a video showing the latest training he is undertaking as he ramps up his recovery from injury.

The Liverpool defender has been out for three-and-a-half months after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage during the 2-2 draw with Everton in October.

Van Dijk, 29, underwent surgery and returned to the Reds' Kirkby base in December to begin light gym work on his knee. He has since travelled to Dubai to continue his rehabilitation at the state-of-the-art NAS Sports Complex.

The Dutchman was filmed kicking a ball last month, and new footage shows he has stepped up his on-pitch training with ball drills and running.

The video posted on Van Dijk's Twitter page also shows the centre-back squatting, cycling and stretching in the gym.

Jurgen Klopp will be pleased to see the update on his star man's recovery, but earlier this week the Liverpool boss admitted it is unlikely Van Dijk will feature again this season.

"At the moment, nobody, no doctor has told me there's a chance for Virgil to play in this season again," said Klopp.

"I don't want to say it is absolutely impossible, but it is not likely. It's not likely and we don't have to discuss these things really."

Van Dijk's long-term injury, as well as those suffered by Joe Gomez (knee) and Joel Matip (ankle ligament), left the Premier League champions with no senior centre-backs available heading into deadline day of the January transfer window.

This prompted the Reds to act at the eleventh hour and they secured the services of Ben Davies from Preston North End and Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke.

Meanwhile, Netherlands boss Frank de Boer hopes Van Dijk - who serves as national team captain - may be fully fit by the time his side face Ukraine in their opening game of the European Championship in June.
