Virgil van Dijk reacts to prospect of Liverpool not winning a trophy this season

Virgil van Dijk claims Liverpool must not be disheartened if they end this season without a trophy.

The Reds are on the brink of a Champions League exit after being thumped 3-0 by Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Wednesday night.

And they require Manchester City to slip up if they are to win the Premier League - their only other hope of a trophy this season.

Liverpool were hoping to take a positive result back to Anfield in the Champions League and despite a positive start to the game, a Lionel Messi brace ensured that the game is almost out of reach.

"We're not going to think about that," Van Dijk told DAZN when asked about the prospect of finishing the season without a trophy.

"We're having a good season and we will try to win something and, if not, we keep working.

"We can be proud of ourselves, we're playing against one of the best teams in the world and obviously in the league we're playing also against one of the best teams in the world.

"We're in both races and I think many, many teams would love to be in our position."

Luis Suarez opened the scoring for Barcelona by lifting the ball over Alisson in the first-half, before celebrating with a knee slide against his former club.

Then the show was stole by Messi in the second half, first prodding home after Suarez hit the bar.

But it was his free-kick with eight minutes left which left fans mesmerised, bending home a finish from 30 yards, leaving the stadium in awe.

The second leg takes place at Anfield on Tuesday night.
