Virgil van Dijk provides fitness update after injuring ankle in Liverpool's dramatic win over Tottenham

Virgil van Dijk has insisted he’ll be fit to face former club Southampton on Friday night despite picking up an ankle injury in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

With the Reds caught out by a counter-attack, Van Dijk was the last outfield player back as he found Moussa Sissoko and Heung-Min Son bearing down on goal.

The 27-year-old read the situation perfectly to force the reluctant former into taking a rushed shot, but took a heavy blow to his ankle in the process.

Van Dijk has started every Premier League match for Liverpool so far this season, and hinted he’s determined to play through the pain barrier as the Reds look to end their 29-year wait for league title when having his say on the decisive moment after the game.

“I know that Sissoko is right footed and preferred him to take the shot,” he said. “I hurt my ankle but hopefully it’s not too bad.

“It hurts, but we will take a look at it. I’ll be fine for Friday.”
