Virgil van Dijk on the Man City lesson Liverpool learned from last season's Premier League title chase

Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool's experience in the title race last season will ensure they won't get too carried away with their five-point lead this time around.

opened up a eight-point gap prior to Manchester City's 3-1 victory at Everton later that day.

The Reds were ahead of City by seven points at one stage during last season's dramatic title chase before they finished the campaign with 97 points, just one behind Pep Guardiola's eventual winners.

Van Dijk insists last year's events have strengthened Liverpool's resolve to merely focus on the next game as they aim to end a 30-year wait for a league title.

"It’s far too early," said Van Dijk. "We’re almost in October and the busy period will come.

"There are still so many games left and the only thing we focus on is the game ahead of us. We don’t want to look at the others because there’s no point doing that.

"Everyone realises that as well because last season, we saw how it turned quickly. We just want to focus on the game ahead of us.

“We have to win every game, that’s how it is. Everyone knew how tough it would be [at Sheffield United]. It’s a great place to come, passionate fans, a great atmosphere. It was a tough game.

"We had moments, we had chances when we should have scored. They didn’t go in, but in the end the three points is all that matters."

The triumph at Bramall Lane extended Liverpool 's run to seven successive games this season, with the sequence stretching to 16 across the start of this term and the end of last.

The Reds haven't dropped a point since a goalless draw with Everton in March but Van Dijk brushed off the run, claiming none of the squad are thinking about the impressive winning streak.

The Netherlands captain added: "It’s the media who love statistics. The reality is we have [won] nothing at the moment. We want to continue to do well and there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

"We’ll take this, recover tomorrow and then prepare for Salzburg (on Wednesday) and that will be a tough game as well.

“We have to be confident, you have to think you’re going to win every game otherwise you might as well stay at home.

"We have the quality, we have the players. The thing is every team we play have different strengths and we have to adapt and battle.

"This was tough, because it was a different challenge to what we face every week. These games are very important and I’m very glad we got the three points.

“I think every game is different. So far this season, we have not had a game like this in my opinion.

"It could have been totally different if we had scored from the first three chances we had in the first half. Then they would have had to come at us, and give us more space.

"There was always going to be a moment of danger with their fans behind them. But we’re definitely growing, we’re definitely getting more experience of that situation and hopefully that will help us in the long run."
