Virgil van Dijk new Liverpool contract latest as defender 'wants new deal'

Virgil van Dijk wants to reaffirm his Liverpool commitment after helping the Reds to Champions League final glory.

Reports on Wednesday suggested the world-class Dutch centre-back is eager to discuss terms over a fresh deal.

The ECHO understands no talks are currently in the pipeline between Liverpool, Van Dijk and his representatives.

But the Reds acknowledge the huge impact the defender has made since joining the club in January 2018 for a fee of £75million.

Van Dijk still has four years remaining on the five-and-a-half-year deal he signed on his arrival.

And Liverpool have more pressing priorities with players such as Joel Matip, Divock Origi and James Milner about to enter into the final 12 months of their contracts.

Van Dijk and his representatives are believed to be relaxed about the situation and are confident any new agreement will be easily reached.

The 27-year-old is the world's most expensive defender and is already among the highest earners at Anfield .
