Virgil van Dijk misses training - but Liverpool fans have nothing to worry about

Liverpool collosus Virgil van Dijk missed training at Melwood today - but Reds need not worry about him missing Sunday's Premier League showdown at Manchester City.

The Reds' Dutch defender was back in homeland receiving a special honour along with some others of his high-achieving compatriots.

The 28-year-old helped Liverpool win the Champions League, captained his country to the inaugural 2019 UEFA Nations League Final and is one of the favourites to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or award, which honours Europe's best footballer.

Van Dijk was among 26 guests received by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima at Noordeinde Palace in the Hague and attended a lunch for Dutch people in various sectors such as art & culture, media, science, sport and business who were 'distinguished by a special achievement'.

The event was to express the Dutch royalty's recognition and appreciation for 'those who have delivered a special achievement'.

Van Dijk is expected to take his place at the heart of Liverpool's defence when Jurgen Klopp 's men try to open up a nine-point lead over title rivals Manchester City on Sunday.
