Liverpool team news: Virgil van Dijk hopefully fit to play Leicester, says Jurgen Klopp

Jürgen Klopp is hopeful that Virgil van Dijk will be able to feature in Liverpool's meeting with Leicester City on Wednesday night.

Van Dijk returned to training on Monday after falling ill after Liverpool's warm-weather training camp in Dubai last week.

The 27-year-old has not missed a Premier League fixture for Klopp's side since a trip to Huddersfield Town last January.

"Virgil was a little bit ill," Klopp confirmed at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday. "He trained yesterday so we will see. He will train today. We will see."

If Van Dijk is absent, it will another defensive blow for Klopp, who is already unable to call upon several first-choice defenders.

Joe Gomez has not played since early December after suffering alower leg fracture against Burnley and Liverpool will also be without right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is suffering from a knee problem.

Dejan Lovren, who has recently recovered from a hamstring issue, is likely to partner Joel Matip in the centre of defence.

With James Milner suspended, Fabinho is expected to fill in at right-back while Georginio Wijnaldum is fit again to play in midfield.

"Dejan's fine," Klopp said. "Fabinho will train today. Trent is getting closer and closer. It looks all very positive but he will not be ready for tomorrow. Gini trained. Gomez, no."
