Virgil van Dijk injury scare for Liverpool after Jordan Pickford tackle against during Everton clash

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk could be an injury doubt for their Champions League opener against Ajax on Wednesday after he was taken off under 10 minutes into the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Van Dijk was taken off after treatment and replaced by Joe Gomez after Jordan Pickford injured him with a high challenge inside the area.

VAR did take a look at the tackle but Van Dijk was offside in the build-up to the collision taking place. No further action was taken against the goalkeeper.

But Van Dijk was forced to hobble off back to the changing rooms and could not continue, meaning Jurgen Klopp brought on Gomez, who had been dropped to the bench, with Joel Matip initially favoured.

Liverpool have three consecutive Champions League matchweeks with important Premier League fixtures against the likes of Sheffield United and West Ham to come too over the next few weeks.
