Virgil van Dijk 'honesty' cost Liverpool against Napoli

Rudd Gullit has hit out at referee Carlos del Cerro Grande over his failure to award a free-kick to Virgil van Dijk in the build-up to Napoli’s goal against Liverpool.

Napoli took the lead at Anfield after Dries Mertens raced clear before firing past Allison in the Liverpool goal.

However replays suggested that Mertens had deliberately collided with the Dutchman in the build-up, leaving the Liverpool centre-back lying on the floor in pain as the ball hit the back of the Kop net.

But following a VAR review, for both the foul and a potential offside, the goal was given, and Gullit believes the incident is clear evidence as to why players continually go to the ground.

"People ask why you go to the ground, and now you know why,” the Dutchman told beinSPORTS.

“It is because if you don’t do that he thinks it is a minor thing even though it is a foul. So you know you have to go down in order to get the attention it deserves.

“This is what happens.”

Dejan Lovren eventually rescued the Reds a point in the second half, but the result means Liverpool miss out on the chance to book their place in the last 16.
